DGS Opens up at York

Wednesday, February 11 2015

The DGS Track team opened up its 2015 campaign with a solid start at York last night.  Many bright spots for the Mustangs included hurdler Nick Kersting who placed 2nd in both hurdle races, the young sprint group that looked very strong in the 55, 200 and particularly the 4x200 where they were victorious at both levels.

The distance crew had a number of standout performances to start off the season:

Junior Jack LaLonde continued where he left off in CC with an impressive 30 second victory in the 3200, running a PR of 9:52, which is currently #2 in IL.  While it's safe to expect bigger and better things from the trio of Freshmen that also ran the 3200, Stephen Pipilas, Luke LaLonde, and Marc Alvarez all got their first 3200 under their belt.  Pipilas ran well enough to sit at the #7 spot for Freshmen in the 3200 since 2008, and the most impressive debut over that time span.

The 4x800 teams competed hard but both came up short to York.  Highlighting the varsity team's effort was a PR by Max O'Meara at 2:08 and a 2:13 effort from Zach Scheffel.  For the F/S team, Ryan Gage made an impressive debut with his 2:18 split.  Sayuj Shah ran a personal best of 2:24 to lead off the squad.

Junior Brandon Hutton ran well in the 600 to place 2nd.  He covered the distance in 1:35

A number of Mustangs ran well in the 1600.  Joey Eterno was the top finisher in the varsity race for DGS, placing 3rd behind Devin Davies and Jon May of York.  His time of 4:53 was a nice improvement from his time trial a week earlier.  In the same race, Kyle Hall ran a lifetime best of 5:43.  Zach Wascher ran well in the Soph. race after just finishing up his swimming season 3 days earlier.  His time of 5:29 shows he's ready to run some fast times this year once he gets back into running shape.  Freshmen Ryan Gage, Rylan Dreyer, and Grant Connolly all ran personal bests in the race as well.  Dreyer and Connolly dropped over 20 seconds each to run under 6 minutes for the first time.

Last but not least, congrats to Jack LaLonde on eclipsing the 60 second barrier in the 400 with his split of 59.96.

The Mustangs compete next on Friday at Hinsdale Central against HC, DGN, and Oak Lawn.
